Growing Up Green

Growing Up Green covers a range of subjects from “utero to university” with advice from nationally recognized children’s health experts and “green” pediatricians who support a philosophy of "whole child care” and treating each child as a unique individual. The book is filled with practical and simple solutions to many of the concerns confronting parents today. It includes:

• A list of the environmental toxins most harmful to children and their source, so parents know exactly what to avoid in everything from clothing to toys.

• How to eat right for both mother and baby, during and after pregnancy. This includes tips on what kind of bottles to buy, greening your nursery, what’s lurking in the conventional grocery store milk aisle, and the power of a “blue moon treat.”

• The benefits and risks associated with vaccines, and how to decide what’s best for your baby in one of his or her first and most important medical interventions.

• How to build on an early green foundation as your child grows up and goes off to school, including the importance of packing lunch, simple recipes for healthier snacking, how to make sure schools are providing alternatives to junk food, and emphasizing regular exercise.

• Concise, easy-to-use guides, such as a web reference guide on green cleaning, green building, buying safer non-toxic toys, and personal care products.

Mrs. Imus is the Founder and President of the Deirdre Imus Environmental Center for Pediatric Oncology® at Hackensack University Medical Center and Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Imus Cattle Ranch for Kids with Cancer.  Deirdre is author of the newest book in the Green This! series, Growing Up Green, Baby and Child Care.  This New York Times bestseller is a practical family guide to raising children in an ever increasing toxic world; and the 2007 New York Times bestseller, Green This! Volume 1: Greening Your Cleaning, offering a wealth of insights and expertise for protecting families from harmful chemicals. She is also author of The Imus Ranch: Cooking for Kids and Cowboys, a national bestseller, and a frequent contributor to the Huffington Post.

Numerous organizations have recognized Ms. Imus’ impact. In May 2008, the USO of Metropolitan New York honored her as "Woman of the Year." In 2007, she was named "Person of the Year" by Spectrum, a magazine for the families of children with autism. Ms. Imus played a leadership role in the passage of the historic $945 million Combating Autism Act of 2006. In May 2007, Deirdre Imus was named a “Champion for Autism” by The Autism Education Foundation of the Morris-Union Jointure Commission in New Jersey and was awarded the Rachel Carson Award from the National Audubon Society for her contributions to conservation. In addition, Mrs. Imus received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Pace University.

In 2006, she was honored with the prestigious Lizette H. Sarnoff Award for Volunteer Service by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. In 2005, she was honored with the Excellence in Cancer Awareness Award by the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation.

Deirdre serves on the boards of several children’s health organizations, including the National Autism Association, Safe Minds, Generation Rescue, SKIP of New York and East Harlem Council for Human Services, Inc., Boriken Neighborhood Health Center.
